Myasthenia Gravis
Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder in which auto-antibody mediated blockade of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors takes place at the neuromuscular junction disrupting the communication between nerves and muscles, resulting in skeletal muscle weakness and fatigue that worsens after periods of activity and improves after periods of rest.
Although MG can affect people of all ages, it is seen more often in women than men and has a prevalence of about 1 in 10,000 to 20,000 people. The associated symptoms such as muscle weakness of limbs, drooping eyelids, double vision, and difficulties in speech, chewing, swallowing and often breathing peak in the second and third decades of life but may present at any age. Other autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and autoimmune thyroid disease may co-occur with myasthenia gravis.
