An ultrasound exam of the breast that is limited and unilateral is a type of imaging test that focuses specifically on one breast. This type of ultrasound exam is usually done when there is a concern about a particular area or lump in the breast. The exam is designed to provide a more detailed image of the breast tissue and can help a healthcare provider to determine whether a lump is benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
During the exam, a healthcare provider will use a handheld device called a transducer to produce high-frequency sound waves that create images of the breast tissue on a monitor. The provider will move the transducer over the breast to capture images of the area of concern. If the provider identifies any suspicious areas on the images, they may recommend additional testing, such as a biopsy or a more comprehensive breast imaging exam.
It's important to note that a limited, unilateral ultrasound of the breast is not a comprehensive screening tool for breast cancer. While it can provide valuable information about a particular area of concern, it may not identify other areas of the breast that could be affected by breast cancer. As such, it is often used in combination with other breast imaging tests, such as mammography or breast MRI, for a more complete evaluation.
