MR Angiogram Brain without Contrast
About Test (What is the test and its uses?)
MR Angiogram is a non-invasive imaging test that uses a magnetic field, the energy of radio waves, and a computer to create images of blood vessels and blood flow in the body. Contrast is a special dye that is used to enhance image quality. This material is not used in MRA without contrast. Owing to the advent of highly efficient new MRA machines, high-quality images with minute details can be obtained without using contrast material.
MR angiogram Brain is used to visualize the blood vessels of the brain.
Why and when do you need this test?
Your doctor may advise this test if you have signs and symptoms of a blood vessel disease of the brain. For example, an MRA can identify a blood vessel supplying blood to the brain tissues blocked by an atherosclerotic plaque or a ruptured blood vessel. It can also show structural abnormalities of blood vessels like congenital malformations, aneurysms (dilatation), stenosis (narrowing), dissection (splitting), or the presence of emboli, etc.
Do you need to prepare for the test?
- Otherwise, your doctor provides you with special instructions, you may eat or drink normally.
- Since the test uses a magnetic field, you may need to tell the doctor if you have any metal implants, pacemakers, or prostheses in your body and bring detailed information about them.
- You would be asked not to wear any jewelry or watches or not bring keys, credit cards, or ATM cards.
What can you expect?
- You will be asked to lie down on the table that will slide into the MRA machine that looks like a large tunnel.
- You need to lie down still and not move to prevent the images from getting blurry.
- A special device called a coil may or may not be kept around your head.
- If you feel uneasy in closed spaces, you may tell your doctor, and he may give you relaxing medicine.
- Inside the machine, you will hear tapping or snapping noises.
- You will be alone in the room but under the constant care of a technician across the glass window who will be talking to you.
- It is a painless procedure that lasts about 15 minutes but may take longer.
- You will be able to return to your daily activities normally after the test.
Are there any risks to this test?
It is a non-invasive test that usually has no risks. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, have kidney disease, or have metallic implants or prostheses in your body.
What do the test results mean?
A radiologist who is an expert in interpreting MRA results will send a signed report to your doctor. Your doctor would be able to tell you if the report shows any abnormality in your blood vessels that may be causing your symptoms. These may or may not include; atherosclerotic plaques, stenosis, dissection, malformations, emboli, etc.
